Targeted at children learning to read, we plan to create an app that assists storybooks to provide a more interactive storybook experience for kids.

We have created a proposal for our capstone project and decided on an Augmented Reality (AR) mobile application for children. As many children in our world now are growing up in the smartphone world, we intended to integrate learning and reading into mobile devices. It can not only give the children immersive experiences, but also interactive ones. We plan to create a storybook that can act as an AR marker in our app and let them view 3D stories in the application.

We plan to bring the characters in the storybook to life and help the young children in their reading journey. One of the features in our app is speech recognition so that children can take part in the story. We intend to do research about the estimated reading time and playtime on the app. The characters in the application will be having voiceovers to assist children who are not able to read fluently yet.

According to a research in Bangladesh, the effectiveness of teaching with AR is investigated in a study conducted with pre-school children. Students were taught using AR apps and their learning improvement increased by at least 30%. The study’s preliminary result found out that AR can be useful for preschool students. Despite the fact that this study was conducted in a developing country, we believe in AR being able to play a part in early childhood education

After we have asked our personas and researched, we have found out that at age 1, children start to pick up books to read. As they grow older, they are able to do more items such as short sentence conversations, answer questions, know the alphabet and read by themselves. We have estimated the attention span for our target age range 3-5 year old to be 6-15 minutes.

In conclusion, we started off getting information through secondary research to build on our app's user experience.
